Anime of the Week: Nagi no Asukara

Rated: PG
Genre: Romance, Drama, Fantasy
Amount of Episodes: Ongoing
Summary: Nagi no Asukara follows four childhood friends who live as sea dwellers in a small village on the ocean floor. Upon learning that their school has suddenly been closed, they are sent up to the surface to attend school with the land dwellers. On arrival they struggle to fit in, but a chance meeting leads them to discover feelings they thought they could never say aloud.
This anime only came out in October 2013, so it's still fairly new, but just seventeen episodes along it's clear that this is an anime that is truly one of a kind. Nagi no Asukara is easily one of the deepest, most thought-provoking anime in existence, delving into sensitive topics such as the conflict between different races that many have experienced. One of the hardest hitting points this anime makes is that everything is finite, and that eventually people change, but staying true to ones self can prove that change doesn't necessarily have to be as bad as you might have thought it would be.
Overall, this is a beautiful anime to watch: from the animation to the moral lessons, everything leads to the invoking of painfully realistic emotions when watching. I'd highly recommend Nagi no Asukara to those who enjoy experiencing meaning and a deep concepts that leave you religiously coming back for more.
