Gaming Review: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a fantasy role-playing game that you can get on your PC, PS3 and/or X-box. It is the fifth instalment of the Skyrim series, but even if you haven't played the previous four Skyrim’s, you can still play the fifth one.

You are Skyrim's last hope, a descendent of the fabled Dragonborn, who can speak the language of dragons and channel their mystical powers after slaying them. The main quest involves discovering why the dragons have returned, but as with previous games in the Elder Scrolls series, you are free to embark on your own adventures.

Some of the things that you can do in the world of Skyrim include:

  • Being able to customize your character/avatar, from their race to the colour of their eyes. Customize your character to be a warrior, a mage, an archer and much more.
  • Explore the world of Skyrim without being pressured to do missions.
  • Do side missions, so even if you finish the main quests of Skyrim you can continue doing the side ones.
  • Level up and learn new abilities and skills.

The graphics in Skyrim are exceptional, as a first person perspective game; it's amazing to see just how realistic and canny the world around the player is. Playing Skyrim, you see the different change in seasons as you walk around the world, the change in scenery is also brilliant and it's truly exceptional to see how much detail has been put into this game.

In all honesty it's pretty hard to pick a worst feature; it all depends on the person's preference while they play the game. Some people don't like the sound but like the graphics, while others prefer the sound but don't enjoy how detailed the graphics are.

The best thing about Skyrim would have to be that the choices you make are almost completely your own. The sky's the limit and it's a great feeling to be able to almost fully control everything you do in this fantasy role-play game. Even though there are missions you can go on, you can even have the choice of whether or not you pick to do them straight away, so if you don't feel like doing the mission at that moment, you can always say no and come back.

The worst thing about Skyrim would have to be the map and directions. Often when I’ve played I'd end up getting lost in the Skyrim world and it'd take me hours to get back on track, most frustrating thing to ever happen and at times it made me rage quit. There's nothing worse than getting lost in unfamiliar lands.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone that loves fantasy role-plays, being able to customize almost everything about your character and even to people who simply enjoy levelling up and having a strong character. It needs a lot of effort put into this game but once you start investing your time into it, you can end up losing track of the time and having a blast!
