10 Ways to Remember 2014 in Music

2014 was a good year for music. From Taylor Swift’s controversy with Spotify and other streaming services to the announcement of a new Fall Out Boy album, we’ve heard some good stories, but what about the music itself? In this week’s 10 Ways, we take a look back at the songs that made 2014 the musical wonderland it was.

1. "Shake It Off"; Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has had quite a year and kick-starting it with this fantastically catchy tune saw her receive a lot of attention, both good and bad. However you feel about Ms. Swift herself, you cannot deny that this song is infectious! Taking a u-turn away from her previous musical style, "Shake It Off" is a pop anthem that caught the world by storm.

2. "Happy"; Pharrell Williams

Pharrell Williams is something of a legend in the music industry. When he brought out this summer tune, he snagged himself accolades such as the most downloaded song in history. Another song guaranteed to worm it’s way into your mind, "Happy" featured on Williams’ second solo album, released in 2014.

3. "All About That Bass"; Meghan Trainor

Although it brought around much controversy, Trainor’s song was also one of the biggest hits of the year. Empowering girls around the world was only one of the many things that this song has managed to do and as well as all of the positive press, it is also a pop hit that frequented the charts and radio stations around the globe!

4. "She Looks So Perfect"; 5 Seconds of Summer

A band that have made 2014 their year, 5 Seconds of Summer have had massive success! This song is a wonderful example of the band’s happy-go-lucky brand of pop rock and although the lyrics may be rather simplistic, it’s a song that you’re guaranteed to sing along with after a few listens!

5. "Like I Can"; Sam Smith

Sam Smith’s sultry vocals and outspoken personality weren’t the only things that took the world by storm this year! "Like I Can" was an instant hit, with the aforementioned vocals doing a fantastic job in making this song an absolute pleasure to listen to.

6. "Budapest"; George Ezra

With acoustic-style music making a comeback in the charts this year, George Ezra’s wonderfully catchy track was featured across many charts and radios. With a simplistic and catchy guitar riff keeping the song at a steady pace, and another set of impressive vocals, "Budapest" is a fantastic song to listen to when you’re chilling out.

7. "Let It Go"; Idina Menzel

Regardless of where you live in the world, you’re almost guaranteed to have heard this song at least once! Disney’s Frozen was a huge success and character Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) proved she was a firm favorite among kids and adults alike with this fantastic anthem of the year.

8. "Anaconda"; Nicki Minaj

Whether you like Minaj or not, this song has been one that gained major attention from almost everybody. From being used as a joke, to turning into a firm favorite of fans everywhere, this song is one that has firmly ingrained itself into the 2014 music charts!

9. "Chandelier"; Sia

Sia has been around for a good while now, but it seems that 2014 and the introduction of this fantastic song have introduced her to the rest of the world. "Chandelier" is off of the singer’s sixth album and whilst the lyrics will resonate more with some than others, the song itself is a piece of absolute genius.

10. "American Beauty / American Psycho"; Fall Out Boy

A late addition into the year, this song was introduced along with the promise of a new album in 2015 of the same name. With catchy woah-ohs, anthem chants, and Patrick Stump’s wonderful voice leading the chaos, this song is the first snippet of what appears to be a very good album!
