Healthy Snacking: Apple Cinnamon Crisps

It can sometimes be difficult to find healthy foods to snack on. Oftentimes, we will turn to a bag of potato chips to satisfy cravings for savoury snacks. However, there are a few great alternatives to potato chips, and one of these alternatives is a batch of cinnamon apple crisps. These simple and easy snacks can be prepared the night before and popped into a bag for long journeys, or they can be eaten fresh out of the oven. Although they take a few hours to bake, they are a delicious alternative to store-bought potato chips!

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples per serving
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Sugar

Directions

  1. Wash your apples, and set them aside. Get out a chopping board and a sharp knife. If you have an apple corer, you can go ahead and cut the core out of the apples if you wish, although this is not required. Pre-heat your oven to roughly 90 degrees Celsius, or 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Cut your apples into thin slices. Get rid of any seeds in the apple slices and set the slices onto a baking tray. You may need to do this using two trays. Set the trays aside.
  3. For the cinnamon topping, mix three tablespoons of cinnamon with one tablespoon of sugar. Mix together roughly. Take a teaspoon, and sprinkle across the top of the apple slices. Turn the slices over, and do the same on the other side.
  4. Pop the tray(s) in the oven. Leave them for roughly an hour, before taking them out and turning them over. Place them in for another hour. After the hour is up, turn off the oven and leave the apple crisps sitting in the warm oven for about 20 minutes.
  5. Take the apple crisps out of the oven and leave them to sit for another ten minutes. You can either eat them straight away, or place them in an airtight container in a cupboard for consumption at a later date.

Tips / Tricks

  • You can leave the sugar out of the recipe if you want a healthier snack — all it does is simply sweeten the recipe further.
  • If you want a way to naturally sweeten the snack, look for the naturally sweeter apple varieties. These will require less sugar, or sometimes no sugar at all. Sour apples may require the full one tablespoon of sugar.
  • The thicker the slices, the more moist the crisps. If you want really crunchy crisps, ensure that you slice the apple as thinly as you can.
