How-To Halloween: Zombie Cakepops

Cakepops are extremely simple to make, and even easier to decorate! These non-expensive cake bites are good for parties, as they can be made in bulk and serve many. For Halloween, you can create a multitude of different designs, but one that will never fail to be spooky is the zombie! These cute little zombie cakepops should serve up to 20 people.

You Will Need:

  • 115g butter, unsalted and at room temperature
  • 115g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 140g self-raising flour
  • 1-2 tablespoons whole-fat milk
  • Half a tablespoon baking powder
  • 300g icing sugar, made up as per instructions on box
  • Green food colouring
  • Black, white and red writing icing
  • Lolly sticks or small skewers
  • Cakepop tray

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit) and grease the cakepop tray with a little butter to prevent the cakepops from sticking to it.
  2. Cream together the butter and the sugar in a large mixing bowl until the mixture is light and fluffy and no lumps remain. Mix in the baking powder at this stage as well.
  3. Add the two eggs to the mixture, mixing thoroughly until there are no lumps. Once this is complete, slowly fold the flour into the mixture. Add 1-2 tablespoons of milk to wet the mixture a little.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the cakepop mould, ensuring not to overfill. Place the cakepop mould onto a tray and put in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Once cooked, remove from the oven and pop the cakepops out of the mould, leaving them to cool for 10 minutes.
  5. While you wait on the cakepops cooling, prepare the icing according to the instructions on the back of the box in a large mixing bowl. Add a few drops of green food colouring and mix thoroughly, ensuring the colour is dispersed evenly and that the icing is thick. Take one of your cakepops and dip it in the icing, ensuring everything is covered. Place on a plate and put a lolly stick or small skewer into the bottom, pushing it about halfway into the cake. Leave to set for 10 minutes.
  6. Once the icing is set, go crazy with decoration! Use your writing icing to add eyes (black and white), and use the red to create a ‘blood’ spatter around the mouth and face. Pop your little zombies onto a plate and enjoy!

Tips

  • If you don’t have a cakepop mould, consider investing in one. Auction-style sites such as eBay usually have them for low prices. Alternatively, you can put the mixture into a large cake tin, bake it as you would with a normal cake and then break it into crumbs before mixing it in with buttercream icing and setting into ball shapes.
  • The brighter you want the skin on the zombie, the more food colouring you should add. For a more grey-style skin, mix a few drops of green food colouring in and one drop of red food colouring.
