With the holiday season comes a whole slew of new flavours and foods that fit right in with Christmas, one of them being eggnog! This holiday favourite starts to pop up in stores all over for the holidays and disappears again until next year. If you’re looking to keep the holiday cheer going all year ‘round or just want something that makes you feel festive, try this Homemade Eggnog recipe!

Ingredients

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ground cinnamon (optional)
  • thermometer

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until they are light and creamy.
  2. Over medium heat, combine the milk, cream and nutmeg in a saucepan. Stir mixture often until the mixture reaches a bare simmer (small bubbles pop through the surface of the liquid every few seconds).
  3. Add a big spoonful of the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture and whisk vigorously. Repeat this, adding one big spoonful at a time, until both mixtures are mixed together.
  4. Once everything is mixed, pour the mixture back into the saucepan and heat it until it reaches 320 degrees Fahrenheit (160 Celsius) on a thermometer.
  5. Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
  6. Pour the eggnog into a pitcher or other container and cover it with plastic wrap. Put it in the refrigerator until chilled.
  7. Once chilled, pour the eggnog into glasses, sprinkle cinnamon on top, and serve!
