Mibba's June Contest Winners
Story Contest
Last month, users were challenged to write a historical fiction piece, and our entrants tackled every subject from every angle, including stories about Jack the Ripper and an ancient Aztec Warrior God. Our top finalists are:
- Doll of Fire by Death_By_Dagger
- Le Monde A Bien Changé by BaconTommyVicious
- Huitzilopochtli by bellus caedes
- Jack by posterofagirl
- The Dreamer by aubs
Judges selected our finalists because they utilized a fresh approach to historical fiction with well-written prose.
Our winner for the contest is posterofagirl with her story, Jack. In this short piece, she utilizes an excellent first person perspective, with Jack the Ripper himself, or um, herself, as the narrator. The twist placed on a classic tale of murder and mystery impressed judges, and provides a very interesting read to anyone looking for a story on the darker side.
Article Contest
In the spirit of summer, users were asked to write a review of one of the many summer movie blockbusters released. Our top finalists are:
- Men in Black III by dr. faustus
- Rock of Ages by TheReasonIsYou
- The Hunger Games: Movie of the Year, or Slow-Starting Time-Waster? By Overconfident
- Prometheus by itsy bitsy spider.
Our finalists were selected for providing thorough reviews that informed readers about everything from the acting in a film to the quality of the soundtrack. A good review is much more than a plot summary, and these articles exemplify that.
Our winner for the contest is Overconfident with her article reviewing The Hunger Games. In her article, the hype surrounding The Hunger Games film is called into question. By discussing the script, pacing of action and casting, Overconfident supports her opinion of The Hunger Games well, but you’ll have to read her article to see which side of the fence she falls on.
Poem Contest
For many, June is a time of changing seasons and the arrival of summer. Because of this, we asked users to get inspired by nature and write a haiku for the June Poem Contest. Our top finalists are:
- Dancers by tonic
- Earthquake by ALEdwards
- Grey Clouds by Chaos Walking
- Beautiful Trees by Silent Dreamer
Our finalists were selected for embracing the haiku form, and using very few words to capture something as dramatic as the beauty of nature.
Our winner for the contest is tonic with her poem Dancers. By creating a wonderful metaphor between moving leaves and dancers, tonic sparked the imagination of our judges and moved us with the simplicity of her words.
July "New Mibba Experience" Contest
Mibba’s Staff and Magazine will host one contest this month, and the theme is a topic on everyone’s mind: New Mibba. Users are asked to write a piece of any style – article, tutorial, review, poem, story, blog series- that embodies the “New Mibba” experience. Entries in the contest could range from a layout making tutorial to a funny limerick about the “two week wait” for New Mibba. For full details and to enter, visit the contest thread on our message board.
