"Murdering the Unborn" by Lost In Space is a short, yet powerful poem depicting how the author feels towards the ideas of abortion. Abortion is an extremely controversial subject and despite Lost In Space’s poem depict the ending of a foetus’ life it shows how difficult the decision for abortion can be, and looks at many aspects of what drives a mother to end her unborn child’s life.

Lost In Space’s poems are all very strong and have major themes of depression and death in them and even though the majority of her poems were written when she was thirteen or fourteen years of age they possess an incredibly mature view on issues people face, and that is one of the main reasons I really admire her poetry and recommend her, especially to older readers.

"Murdering The Unborn" is a great poem not only because of its message, but the words of the poem somehow remain beautiful though deeply saddening. Lines such as “Drunken thoughts edged with venom circle my head, I can’t kill this thing, so the drink will instead,” and “An unwanted weed drains my soul from the inside,” show the cruel side to the decision of abortion, and in the beginning the reader could feel a hatred towards the mother for what she is about to do, and the title in itself ("Murdering The Unborn") adds to that. But as the poem progresses, the author creates almost a sense of pity towards the mother as she seems to asks her child for forgiveness “It was never my intention to end you this way”.

Lost In Space’s poems can be hard going for a new reader of poetry and their topics are depressing and in some people’s eyes could be seen as ‘triggering’, but I think that is what makes her poems so great. She’s not afraid to delve into a darker world and see the worst sides of life, therefore produces work that is able to pull out the deepest emotions in people.
