Alice is given the opportunity of a lifetime to tour with her cousin’s band (My Chemical Romance) as they perform around the US and although Alice is claimed to be “just your average girl” the events that are unfurling seem to start depicting otherwise.

As soon as she arrives the red-headed Gerard Way seems to take an interest her, flirting and being overly inappropriate on occasions to the nineteen year old, and Alice can’t work out whether she’s just another one-night stand in his eyes or something much more?

Her cousin, Frank Iero, warns her of his band mates’ ways, the alcohol abuse, the person Gerard turns into when he’s drunk, how he has his way with girls sometimes younger than Alice, but her feelings are confused towards him. She seems to enjoy his flirting and other times she’s quick to put his behaviour down to drink but one thing is certain and that is that she is unable to figure this man out.

Join the Masquerade writes a very realistic, modern day relationship between two people. You can feel the tension between Gerard and Alice and Join the Masquerade writes their behaviour so convincing and maturely which adds to the realism.

From the first chapter I was drawn into this story. Even though the author says herself that this sort of story has been done to death but They Say You’ve Been Pleading is a whole different view on the idea of the average teenage girl touring with a famous band. Alice isn’t the stereotypical band loving girl though; she’s composed and cool and spends no time ‘fan-girling’.

You don’t have to be a fan of My Chemical Romance to enjoy this story, it’s a powerful romance story that leaves the reader craving the next updates.
