"Alexandria gave her life over to the vampire Marcel without thinking of the consequences. Taking to the lifestyle easier than most, she’s prepared to give up her immortality when she meets the man who brings up memories of things that never happened. And feelings she’s never felt before."

Beautiful Monster focuses on a woman named Alexandria who starts off as a human before taking up a proposition by a mysterious man by the name of Marcel. She becomes his Queen which ultimately leads to her becoming a vampire.

Yes, another vampire story but Indigo Umbrella plays the card well. Her vampires drink human blood, are immortal, develop rapid and extreme sunburns in sunlight and can have sex. But it's not these features that makes her vampires, but rather it's the characterisation that is shown throughout the story.

In one of the first few chapters of the story, Alexandria encounters a young boy in Rome who gives her a sense of familiarity and comfort. In the same chapter he loses his life in an accident and the next chapter skips a few years and settles in the streets of New York City. Here, Alexandria is out on a hunt when she encounters a scent that once again gives her a sense of familiarity and comfort, and she seeks out the person whose scent it is to try and place why it's familiar to her. That's when Finn enters the story.

Finn is a cello-playing human who Alexandria saves from being just another meal to another vampire. This action acts as the beginning to the drama that unfolds throughout the story as Alexandria desires after him only to have the conflict of being Marcel's queen stopping her. But with how Indigo Umbrella portrays Marcel, you can't help but wish that she could stay as Marcel's queen as well as being with Finn. Of course, though, that can't happen.

As with any story, there has to be an antagonist among the character and that character is the vampire called Viola in this story. She wants Alexandria's position as Marcel's queen and hungers after the power that it brings. These feelings are clear in her words towards Alexandria and later in her story with her actions.

Beautiful Monster is complete with twenty nine chapters and a not-so-happy ending that gives way to Beautifully Chaotic which is the sequel and is currently on its sixth chapter. Each chapter is well written and the style in which the author writes in compliments the characters. I can honestly say that I looked forward to each and every update that was given and longed for more once it was done. I would recommend this to anyone to read. Indigo Umbrella is truely a fantastic writer, and that's only going on Beautiful Monster.
