To be a child, and to be caught, meant to become a Baby. To all children, it was a fate worse than death.

In a post-apocalyptic world, children are the victims of a foul scheme. Dr Oblonskitch has created a machine of war, a modified human child called a Baby. By fusing limbs with flesh, Oblonskitch has created the ultimate in weaponry. After all, who would hear a child crying and not attempt to help it in some way?

Enter Annabel, a seven-year-old girl with the responsibilities of your average adult. Annabel is a Caretaker, a child that looks out for the safety of other children. Annabel’s job is to make sure that none of her group – from fourteen-year-old Antonia to five-year-old London – are taken by the adults and transformed into Babies. Passed down through the ranks, Annabel was given the role of Caretaker after her sister sacrificed herself for the good of the group. This story takes place two years after that incident, and shows a hardened version of the Annabel that we see in the first chapter.

"Caretaker" tells the story of this small group and their struggles throughout their journey. Annabel and her young charges come across several obstacles on their way, including things as simple as the weather, changed drastically by the nuclear wars of the past years.

Although only four chapters in, TabbyKitty13 has begun to paint a picture of a world where nuclear war has ravaged the landscape and left behind a Hell greater than no other. The story of Annabel is told through beautiful imagery, stunning descriptions and a character that the reader connects with almost instantly.

With a unique plot and fantastic writing style, "Caretaker" is a welcome breath of fresh air into the post-apocalyptic craze that seems to be gripping writers right now. I couldn’t recommend enough that you all go and check out this fantastic piece of work!
