“I’m so sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Tomlinson,” Doctor Scott had apologized somberly, as he’d watched both parents clutch their lifeless son. “I’m so sorry for your loss.”

Losing anyone is hard, but losing a child is the hardest. No parent should ever have to bury their child, especially when the child has only just begun to live their life. That is something that everyone understands and hardly anyone would object to. Seeing someone so small hurt so terribly could bring even the coldest person to their knees.

When Louis Tomlinson and his wife, Paloma, learn that their baby boy is sick, their world is shattered. Like a broken mirror on a bathroom floor, their lives are in pieces. Their grief controls them, but they stay strong for their son, comforting him and encouraging him to keep fighting. As two of the best parents Harry Styles has ever seen, Louis and Paloma never give up on little Patrick. Even when it seems hopeless, they hold on.

This beautiful one-shot, inspired by Taylor Swift’s song, “Ronan” is absolutely breathtaking. It is a short, but brilliant, piece, that had me in tears after just a few moments of reading. I’m not usually the type to read one-shots, preferring long stories instead, but I was extremely pleased with My Best Four Years.

One of the best short pieces I have read, I highly recommend this story to anyone who is feeling a little emotional.
