As a fanfiction writer Fandango does more than give celebrities new life. She uses characters she's familiar with to make statements about facts of life, death, and last days.

Spencer Smith is sick. He's not going to get better. As his best friend, Brendon sets out to bring Ryan and Jon home to say goodbye. Even more impossibly he desperately tries to keep everything from falling apart until it's time. When they all come together they uncover things they buried in the past, and they're forced to deal with them before they run out of chances.

In the middle of all the sorrow, the anger, and everything they left unresolved, four boys find each other again before they're forced to let one go.

The emotional toll put on each character allows the reader to feel for each one differently. Yet no man is without blame, whether it's leaving, dying, or loving someone in all the wrong ways.

The characters could have different names and faces and the emotional effect of the story would still be intact. You don't need to know Panic! at the Disco to be enthralled by the overarching meaning, that you have to do the right things, even though they hurt.

As Spencer fades away, you'll get the feeling that you're fading too.
