“Toby, let me train with you!” I whined as I watched Toby sharpen his knife.

“I have already told you no,” he replied curtly before setting down the sharpener. He then placed the knife under my chin, forcing me to look him in his eyes instead of watching his weapons. “And don’t call me Toby. Just because you called me that in our childhood doesn’t mean you can today.” Tobias moved his knife away, glaring before turning around. His wings hid the rest of him from me as he walked away.

“You never give me a reason!” I called out. “You know I’m strong and you know you need help with the war!” I heard him snarl before he hesitated and looked over his shoulder.

“Marion, you’re a female, which means you’re needed for keeping our species alive. If you get killed in a battle, that could be the end of us all. Please, respect that.”

Of all the planets scattered throughout the universe, it seems very likely that earth is not the only one inhabited by intelligent life. Somewhere out there, there must be at least one other planet with intelligent beings, even if they aren’t identical to the ones living on earth. Somewhere out there, there must be a species that proves we are not alone.

Survival tells of such a planet, many light years away, which is inhabited by high-thinking beings, not far different from anything we’ve seen. Nakir was a thriving planet, filled with life and extremely intelligent beings, known as Kasiens. Like the planet, the Kasiens species thrived, evolving in a fashion similar to humans, but with wings on their backs. As a whole, the Kasiens had potential, but unfortunately, the planet died, and the beings had to flee before they died with it.

It was then that earth learned of the beings that were fairly similar to themselves. The Kasiens landed on another planet, hoping to make the planet their new home, but they weren't met with open arms. The humans that were also trying to inhabit the planet had a few disagreements with the Kasiens, and war soon broke out. The populations severely decreased, and the two groups retreated, but they vowed to one day finish the war. This is where Survival begins.

A fantastic original fiction filled with both war and romance, Survival is a story that has something for everyone. From the torture given to the Kasiens by the humans to the romance that blooms in the midst of such turmoil, Survival proves that every piece of a story is part of a bigger picture, and Nicole proves she knows exactly how to put those pieces together.

Simply the prologue gives readers a feeling of promise for the story, as it pushes an idea into their mind, burying it amongst all the thoughts of fantasy and adventure, and as the story continues, that promise is delivered.

Survival is a full-length novel, completed at just over fifty-thousand words, and is more than worth the read. I highly recommend this story to anyone who wants to get hooked on a good original fiction that is good enough for the bookshelves.
