Every high school has that one teenager that claims that they’re different. They say that they’re special or that their life is more difficult than everyone else’s. They believe is something in their life – whether it is a fight with their parents or the leaking gas tank in their car – that makes their life more tragic and heart wrenching than everyone else’s. While this teenager is babbling on about the troubles of their life, there is someone who is hurting twice as bad, but in secret. This person is James.

James is a typical high school student who deals with the same things as other high schoolers. He’s late for class, forgets to do his homework, and even falls asleep in class. Everything about James seems average, but there is something he is struggling with that no one else can see.

James is gay.

Being gay is something James has always worried about. The thought has always been at the back of his mind, eating away at him, and after a long while of inner turmoil and torture, he realizes he has to face it, even though he has no idea how.

Half Empty is a beautiful and heartwarming story about a boy who is desperately trying to find himself in a world where he doesn’t fit in. This story, which is both tragic and charming at the same time, is very reminiscent of A Fault in Our Stars by John Greene, and anyone who enjoyed the novel is sure to find something about Half Empty that they love.
