MM Reviews: Pretty Girl
There normally comes a time in relationships that many people hate. It happens when there's no other place the relationship can go without it having run its course. Sometimes both people in the relationship agree when it comes to extinguishing what they once had, and sometimes it's only one of them who feels that there is nothing left to salvage. There can be an array of things that contribute to why a relationship can end: not wanting to stay committed to that person for the rest of their life, being unable to deal with something that can't be brushed underneath the rug, and sometimes it can be because there just isn't enough time to dedicate to the relationship.
For John O'Callaghan, it's the latter reason that leads to him standing outside Seraphina's door in the pouring rain.
Poignantly stunning, Pretty Girl allows the reader to see all the good things about the relationship, the ones that John loves but ultimately is not enough. kayyish is able to evoke the emotion that makes the reader able to immerse themselves into the words written and allow them to feel what both John and Seraphina are feeling.
Not only is this heartbreaking, but it also won first place in the Magazine's "Music Month" contest that ran in June. With only the requirement of writing about anything within the music industry, Pretty Girl takes it and interweaves John's time spent with his band into the breakup. Anyone who likes The Maine or even a nice, short oneshot about a musician will enjoy this winning piece!
