MM Reviews: Dead Man's Land

Type: Original Fiction
Genre: Tragedy
Rating: PG-13

Taboo topics aren't too common in stories in general because authors are normally concerned that they might offend someone, but sometimes authors might not broach a topic because they think the readers might not like that they've deviated from their normal route of romance or horror. Writing about something that is different to what you normally write about can be fulfilling in more ways than one, especially if it's one of the taboo topics that so many people steer away from. Not only can writing about the topic open the reader's eyes to the actual topic themselves, but it can also help strip away the label of "taboo" so that the subjects aren't seen as controversial and other authors feel that they can write about them.

Dead Man's Land is a lengthy one-shot about racial tensions during the time when slavery had been abolished legally but society still acted the same. Throughout the piece Jeremiah's voice flows out naturally and the reader can't help but imagine the words being spoken aloud, as if he's in the room with them to tell the story of him and Lacy.

Breathtaking, beautiful and with just enough emotion, break.my.bones is a writer that knows how to tackle taboo topics in the right way without trying to censor herself to please readers. Despite being a one-shot that stands at over five thousand words, any attempt to break it up would disrupt the flow and take away the full potential. As well as that, when reading Dead Man's Land, the reader has to immerse themselves into its entity and read right to the end without stopping so if you're thinking of checking this out, clear five minutes of time to read the piece and be able to appreciate it. You will not regret it.
