MM Reviews: The Fat Bubble Gum

Author: maudaah
Type: Original Fiction
Genre: Teen
Rating: PG

It's uncommon for a story to focus on a protagonist that isn't all too nice. Normally, it's the protagonist that is the victim of someone who is deliberately mean or conniving. Taking a look at The Fat Bubble Gum and the reader would be surprised to see that the unnamed main character, not only retells the things that kids at school did to the victim, but also what he did himself. This boy is no saint.

Angela, or as she was called because of her weight, the Fat Bubble Gum, takes all the insults and bullying without saying a word until one day she disappears. It's after that disappearance that the story is narrated from. Although the reader cannot help but feel sorry for her, this piece highlights the ugly truth of high school - and even life after that - where people aren't always nice. However, the conclusion is one that is sure to bring a smile to the reader's face, with the comeuppance one that can only be applauded.

With such a telling message, it is clear to see how this placed first in the Magazine's "Sticking to It" contest that was hosted in January. And if that isn't enticing enough, The Fat Bubble Gum is a short story that is comprised of just over five hundred words, making it a short read that packs a punch. You never know, it might even become your favourite short story!
