Title: She Hates Being Seen
Author: chekov.
Type: Free-verse
Rating: PG-13

Have you ever felt uneasy at night? Ever thought that you weren’t the only one in a darkened room? Do you often wonder whether the realm of the living is any different to the realm of the dead? Feeling uneasy in the dark is a natural human instinct, whether you wholeheartedly believe in ghosts or not. But for many, the thought that something else might be joining them while they try to sleep is a terrifying idea that keeps them awake at night.

She Hates Being Seen is a poem that instills that very fear into the reader, right down to the very core. Even the image in the layout puts the reader instantly into the mind-set of someone watching them. Describing perfectly the sense of fear that accompanies feeling like you’re being watched, this poem talks about a nameless girl. Searching and searching is fruitless, as you will never find her. That is, unless you happen to cast your eyes upward.

In this poem, chekov. has done a magnificent job of using imagery to place the reader instantly into the situation. Through a combination of metaphor and word-choice, She Hates Being Seen seems to perfectly showcase the contents of many peoples’ worst nightmares, leaving the reader both in awe and completely uncomfortable at the same time. If you’re not squeamish or scared of the dark, you should challenge yourself to read this poem. But always remember: don’t look up.
