“And the universe asked, 'qu’est-ce que je feraid sans toi?'”
Though there is a large number of fantastic original stories on this site, not many deal with disability within the life of a teenager the way that aubree james. does in Symptoms of Life.
The story follows Florence Todd, a teenager who has her life turned upside down when an accident takes away everything, including her leg and her mother. Once an aspiring Olympic athlete, Florence must try and adapt to a new life, with a new family, at a new school, and one less leg. Not to mention Mr. Hughes, the outcast teacher who seems to be there every time Florence turns around.
It’s hard to only pick out a couple great things about Symptoms of Life, but some things that stand out above the rest are the lack of sugar coating life with a disability and that it isn’t solely centered around a relationship. Florence is a very real, relatable character just trying to get through life. She is shown at her lowest points but still gets up and moves on, which is something that everyone can relate to.
Currently active and sitting at eight chapters, this story is definitely one you don’t want to miss out on!
