Featured Story: Piece in Our Time

Piece in Our Time is an original fiction written by Sassenach that takes place during WWII. In this week's Featured Story, the author tells us about her inspiration, writing habits and process. This interview gives a deeper look into what it's like to write a historical fiction story.

Give us a brief summary of Piece in Our Time.

Piece in Our Time is the story of a woman named Eva who in 1942 is a WWII nurse at Pearl Harbor on the day the US is attacked. In the attack she is somehow sent back in time to the 8th century in Scandinavia, where she is found by Asmund Thorirson a Viking clan leader. Eva has to come to a decision: if she can get back will she want to or will she want to stay with the crude, and rugged Viking leader?

What inspired you to write Piece in Our Time?

The T.V. show Outlander inspired me. I began reading the books and I loved them but I did not decide to write my own story until I watched the first season of the show. I love it, I absolutely recommend it.

How long have you been working on this story?

It will be two years in December that I began writing this story.

What is your favorite thing about writing Piece in Our Time?

I love creating a romance in a different time period. Something about writing how two people fall in love in a non-modern era is amazing to me.

What is the most challenging thing about writing it?

I try really hard to be historically accurate. It is difficult. But I'm a history major in school and it's important to me.

Have you ever experienced writer's block with this story? If so, how did you overcome it?

I have had writers block with this story twice, and when I get it I take a break. I've taken two very long breaks from this story.

Do you write with an outline, or just wing it?

I just wing every chapter. I'm a huge procrastinator. So if I tried writing an outline it would never get done. But if I decide to write a chapter and I sit down just to write that one chapter it will get done immediately.

Do you have any pre/post writing rituals?

To get inspired I listen to instrumental Celtic music.

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

I am so thankful to all of you. I would not come back from my breaks if I did not have you guys reading my story. Thank you so much. I hope you continue to enjoy the tale of Eva and Asmund!

Special thanks to cleopatra. and losing control. for editing!
