Featured Story: The Experiment Revolution

Experiment 0.4 can only remember everything she's been told since she woke up. With no memories of who she was before that, she does not know what she is being kept from. The Experiment Revolution is a newly completed story that has her begin to learn what her purpose is to be. Here's Domi to explain more about her story.

Give us a brief summary of The Experiment Revolution.

Basically, this girl wakes up on a lab table with no memories and the scientist told her she has to keep a journal. She doesn't know what's happening other than she's supposed to be the leader of The Experiment Revolution. The problem is, the scientist won't tell her what that is.

What made you start working on this story?

I took a creative writing class my senior year of high school and our final was to either write a poetry book, a short story book, or a novella. I chose to do a short story book. It wasn't working out so I went back to my pre-writes from middle school to get inspiration. When it came to this story, the only thing 12 year old Domi wrote was "experiments". So I used that incredibly vague description to make The Experiment Revolution.

Do you have a favourite character?

I have two. I love the narrator since I get to explore her mind, but I also like Terra. She's another part of the Revolution.

What's the hardest part about writing The Experiment Revolution?

Probably trying to make the journal entries seem like a journal entry and not formal prose. I've never done a story like this before so it's something new. Kind of like an...experiment.

What led to the title choice?

So I was printing out my novella for school just about 4 hours before it was due because I'm a procrastinator. Before I clicked "print", I saw I still didn't have a title. I said "oh well" and then fast forward to the class period. I look at a poster my teacher had that said "The American Revolution". I quickly scribbled The Experiment Revolution onto the paper. It was supposed to be a holding title, but it kind of just stuck.

Do you have any pre-writing habits you have to do before you can write?

I bullet point simple plot points. Like "oh so-and-so introduces herself here" or "so-and-so comes across blah blah blah here". My pre-writes are always incredibly vague because I feel like that gives me more room for different ideas.

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

Thank you for sticking around with me and putting up with my procrastination.

Special thanks to exploding boy. and Audrey T for editing.
