“I brought you your art supplies," Kat said helplessly, lifting his little black kit from its place on the floor. "Mrs. Pruitt down the street loved the last painting you did. The one with Medusa? She said it was inspired. I'm not really sure what that means, but it sounded like a good thing.

When we are ill, sometimes even doing the things that we love in life can be a struggle. We desperately want, sometimes even crave, the release and comfort that comes with partaking in a familiar activity. But, without the energy or motivation to do what we so desperately desire, sometimes we never make it into that cave of happiness. Without that something to keep us distracted from our health, even if only for few hours, it can be impossible to pull yourself out of a slump.

Felix is sick, and Kat knows this. His dementia has worsened over the period of time that she has known him, to the point that he barely even talks to her. But still, Kat tries and tries to bring back the Old Felix, the Felix that she knows and loves. When she leaves his art supplies with him, perhaps to help him remember, she does not receive a single acknowledgement. What results from this simple action is a beautiful story of acceptance, love and the knowledge that even if the person you think you knew is gone, they may reside somewhere deep within.

Art is a heartbreakingly beautiful tale of a love marred by the pain of a debilitating illness, but it also paints a story of a relationship so sweet that every single word that iron and wine. writes will have you both crying and smiling. With vivid imagery and a wonderful knack for descriptive sentences that leave your senses tingling, she has created a story that will get under your skin in just over one-thousand words. Although short, this story packs a punch and if you’re looking for anything to add to your reading list that oozes emotion, Art should be that story.
