Featured Poem: Starry Eyes

One of the most delightful things about writing poetry is the way in which a poet can intrinsically link together seemingly unattached objects with emotions that they may be feeling at any point in time. We associate memories with people, and people with points in our lives where we may have been going through a journey of discovery in terms of exciting new feelings. Starry Eyes is one such poem. Through the use of beautiful imagery, HelloIt’sLee has created a piece of work that is a joy to read. I caught up with them to ask a few questions about the poem itself!

Give us a quick summary of Starry Eyes.

Starry Eyes is a comparison between stars and the eyes of someone you love, and how I, the narrator, used to think it was stupid to compare eyes to stars because I thought stars were much prettier and more awe-inspiring, until I met someone who changed my opinion.

What is the inspiration behind this poem?

I was stargazing actually with my best friend at the time, and I was pathetically infatuated with said best friend. So basically it was just me being a little bit love-sick, haha.

How did you choose the title for it?

The title is pretty self-explanatory, Starry Eyes being the topic of discussion as well as including both subjects of the comparison.

What was your favourite thing about writing Starry Eyes?

My favorite thing about writing this poem was that it was quite optimistic. I tend to write more depressing things and focus on cynical themes usually, but writing this was a focus on the positive side of an admittedly kind of crappy situation (seeing as said best friend didn't like me back, and that friendship fell apart).

Do you have any writing rituals that you follow when writing poems?

The only writing ritual I follow is, I like to write my poems down with paper and pen first, and then transcribe them to the computer and edit them there.

What do you look for when reading works by other site members?

When I look through other poetry, I enjoy reading things with interesting and unique perspectives on subjects that are very relatable. I love experimental styles, which is why E. E. Cummings is one of my favorite poets.

Is there anything you would like to say to anybody that reads your poems?

To anyone who has read anything I've written, thank you for taking the time to do so! I write for the enjoyment of others as well as myself, so I'm glad for any feedback, whether constructive or positive.

Finally, do you have any other poems that you think people would enjoy?

If you enjoyed my poem Starry Eyes, some of my other poems you might find interesting would be: Seasick/Unlovable, Her (Song), and Immortality.

Special thanks to losing control. and Audrey T for editing!
