Featured Poem: Lightening Bug's First Kiss

Love, as an emotion, is pure and heartfelt. The memories that we associate with somebody we truly love are often those that we remember vividly. As well as giving wonderful snapshots into our lives, they also mark important periods for us. With such heartfelt feelings behind them, it’s no wonder that snapshots such as these make for great poetry! Lightening Bug's First Kiss is one such poem that showcases a moment between two people. With a wonderfully simple rhythm and such emotion contained throughout, it is the perfect example of love shown through poetry. I caught up with Luis D. to learn a little more about this wonderful poem!

What is the inspiration behind this poem?

I was on a deployment with my future wife. We used to sit on a fighter jet wing at night and talk about life and gaze at the stars. The first night I kissed her felt like the first time I've truly been in love.

How did you choose the title for it?

We gave ourselves nicknames so no one knew we were dating. Her name was Lightening Bug, and mine was Tough Feathers.

What was your favourite thing about writing Lightening Bug's First Kiss?

The tears. Remembering how innocent and pure our love was.

Do you have any writing rituals that you follow when writing poems?

No, and I would like to get better. Seeing the many great pieces on Mibba makes me want to try harder.

What do you look for when reading works by other site members?

Symmetry and rawness. People have amazing poetry on Mibba.

Is there anything you would like to say to anybody that reads your poems?

Yes, moments are as fleeting as the seconds in time. Embrace them and remember them. Write them down and share them so we can see what you saw through your words.
