Featured Poem: Her Earth

"Her Earth' is a wonderful poem written by Double Infinity. In this week's Featured Poem, we take a closer look at this piece.

How would you summarize "Her Earth"?

This particular poem is actually a summary of the poetry collection Tick Marks that I printed last year. Though I can't pinpoint all the references, this poem is a sombre clincher to a period in my life where I lost my identity, and a statement of acceptance that I can't control the immoral decisions that the people in my life have made.

How did you choose the title for it?

Landscapes are brought up as symbols in this poem, but I also named it "her" Earth, as if she is possessive of it, because our subjective experiences completely change reality.

What inspired you to write this poem?

I felt that I needed to say goodbye to myself if I ever wanted to grow, and writing has always been how I communicate with my soul. This poem is basically a message to my past experiences, telling them I won't be seduced by their cruelty and sorrow. Thus I am moving forward, down the hill.

What was your favorite thing about writing "Her Earth"?

The last line: To a sun speared by the cliffs. Not only is there a sunset occurring, the whole dynamic of "her"/my world is changing, but it doesn't elaborate what comes after. That means even I don't know.

When writing, do you have any rituals you follow?

I like to write between activities or while I'm about to fall asleep. Because of that, I feel pressured to write more quickly and powerfully, and I don't end up fawning over excessive details. (Coffee is awesome too.)

Is there anything you would like to say to anyone who reads your poem?

That my poems are often abstract and vague, and usually play with language and double entendre. Because of this, I don't want people to just understand the story I'm telling through poetry. I want everybody to draw their own interpretation, even if it deviates from my original meaning. Again, subjective experience shapes reality.

Do you have any other poems you think people would enjoy?

Perhaps! But all the poetry I'm proud of is being published currently, so they're unavailable online. But they are all important components to me, and I think follow a similar style- and if for nothing else, I don't mind scoffing with the general public at how much I've grown as writer!
