Featured Story of the Week: Like a Skyscraper

Like a Skyscraper is a wonderful story written by HbisYellow. In this week's Featured Story, we take a closer look at this wonderful work!

Give us a brief summary of Like a Skyscraper.

Kaelyn Schultz is a young girl that moves to Forks with her mother shortly after her father dies in the war. She has demons that she tries to keep hidden, but a certain vampire gets involved and makes her feel things she never thought she would. Emmett Cullen's marriage is on rocky terms, and his singer showing up in Forks doesn't help. The two try to get to know each other, but they are constantly faced with difficult obstacles that make it seem like they won't get their happy ending.

What inspired you to write Like a Skyscraper?

Demi Lovato's song, Like a Skyscraper is my main inspiration. As soon as the song was released, I bought it and listened to it over and over again. The lyrics are powerful and fuel a lot of my ideas for the story.

How long have you been working on this story?

I first published my story in 2011. It's been over two years, but that's because I've been busy with college. I'm starting to post more regularly now.

What is your favorite thing about writing Like a Skyscraper?

My favorite thing was developing my original character, Kaelyn. I took my time when I brainstormed how to portray her, and I'm happy with the outcome. I wanted her to be tough but be able to lean on others when she needed it.

What is the most challenging thing about writing it?

I've had to do a lot of research because Kaelyn has a certain problem, I don't want to give away any spoilers, but it's something I've never experienced first hand. I've tried to make it realistic, but I'm not sure how that's working out.

Have you ever experienced writer's block with this story? If so, how did you overcome it?

Yes, I had a major writer's block last year. I took a break from Mibba and my others stories so I could relax and start with a clean slate. I stressed myself out by trying to update on a quick schedule so I stopped doing that and focused on making my story better.

Do you write with an outline, or just wing it?

I have an outline(: I tried to "just wing it" in the past, but I felt like all those stories were lacking quality. Now I have outlines for all my stories.

Do you have any pre/post writing rituals?

I usually listen to Like a Skyscraper when I'm writing this story. It makes me remember why I wanted to write it and sometimes inspires me with new ideas.

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

To all my readers, thank you for sticking with me for the last two years. It's been a work in progress, but I'm happy with the way it's turning out. And I adore all the comments I get from my dedicated readers. There are always a few that comment on each chapter, and I love them for that. I'm already working on my next chapter already so hopefully it will be updated soon!

Special thanks to gaskarth; and Katie Mosing for editing!
