Featured Story of the Week: The Impossible Daughter

The Impossible Daughter is a wonderful story written by SkyeYvonne.. In this week's Featured Story, we take a closer look at this wonderful work!

Give us a brief summary of your story.

If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, then you may remember The Doctor’s “body double” from season 4. This new version of the Doctor is only part Time Lord, but half human, and therefore can only live out a human lifespan. The Doctor leaves this body double with his old companion Rose Tyler, and my story begins sixteen years later. The two have had a child together named Nova, who is in danger of being taken and contained by all of The Doctor’s enemies across time and space. No one knows what she’s capable of, as she is the first ever naturally born half human, half Time Lord in creation. Both her parents are killed in an attempt to keep her safe, but in a last ditch effort, her father sends for the only man he trusts to protect her. The real Doctor from whom he was created. The story follows her travels with him and his current companion, River Song.

What inspired you to write this story?

My love for Doctor Who! I also wanted to write about something that hadn’t already been done before. I’ve seen stories with The Doctor and his Companions, whether they be from the actual show or fictional, but I’ve never seen one involving a child. I wanted something different, and when I came up with the idea, I went for it.

How long have you been working on this story?

I first published The Impossible Girl on February 24th of this year, and I took about a week prior to that to further develop the concept and write the prologue. So really, not for very long at all!

On average, how much time do you spend writing this story each week?

Sadly, I can only spend a couple of hours writing each week. I’m a full time college sophomore and I work, and I also am an avid reptile keeper. So, most of my time is dedicated to studying, working, cleaning tanks and feeding animals. I write in between and whenever I can.

How did you choose the title for this story?

It’s somewhat of a spin-off from what The Doctor calls Clara Oswald, his current companion in the show. She’s known as The Impossible Girl because he wasn’t able to figure her out. Nova is the “Impossible Daughter” because she was never supposed to have existed.

What is your favorite thing about writing this story?

My favorite thing is that the possibilities are absolutely unlimited! If I ever run out of ideas, it’s totally and completely my fault because what can’t you do with a ship that travels anywhere in space and time? You’d definitely never get bored.

What is the most challenging thing about writing this story?

The most challenging is that I am still contemplating whether or not to alternate point of views. One of my lovely readers commented on the story saying that she’d enjoy reading the story from The Doctor’s POV to see how he felt about everything that was going on. I’d love to do this. But The Doctor has an incredibly complex and brilliant mind. I’m not sure if I’d be able to do him much justice.

Have you ever experienced writer's block with this story? If so, how did you overcome it?

Thankfully I have not. It’s still so early in the story that I can’t afford to have writers block. Usually if I get writers block, I get frustrated and then lose interest in the story. But so far, no worries.

Do you write with an outline, or just wing it?

I have the basic concept of where I want things to go in my head, but other than that I just wing it.

Do you have any pre/post writing rituals?

Not really. I sit down with either a dog, snake, or lizard in my lap and just write. Usually the first couple of lines are always the hardest for me, so I guess my pre-writing ritual is to get all the bad starts out of the way by writing and deleting a few times, and then go from there. I don’t really have any post writing rituals either other than to spell/grammar check my work and then post it to Mibba.

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

Thank you! Every new subscriber, recommender, commenter, and reader always pushes me and inspires me to quickly write out that next chapter. It might take me a while to get this going because of school, but please bear with me!

Special thanks to Formaldehyde. and Katie Mosing for editing!
