Poem Types: Free Verse

Free verse is an open form of poetry. It tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech which means that it does not use consistent meter patterns, rhyme, or any other musical pattern.

Famous Poets

David Herbert Lawrence was an English poet who was published as D. H. Lawrence. His collected works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them, Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, and instinct.

This can be seen here in one of his poems called Anxiety:

"The hoar-frost crumbles in the sun,
The crisping steam of a train
Melts in the air, while two black birds
Sweep past the window again.
Along the vacant road, a red
Bicycle approaches; I wait
In a thaw of anxiety, for the boy
To leap down at our gate.
He has passed us by; but is it
Relief that starts in my breast?
Or a deeper bruise of knowing that still
She has no rest."

Another famous poet by the name of Emily Dickinson was popular for her free verses.

Emily Dickinson was an American poet. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts to a successful family with strong community ties, she lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life. Many of her poems deal with themes of death and immortality, however, one of her poems is neither.

A Book

"There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!"

Mibbian Poems

This first poem written by Steal-My-Heart is called I’m Sorry Dear. This poem is beautifully written and invokes a lot of emotion. It’s about someone writing to another person, confessing to them about how much they mean to the person writing the letter, but the person writing doesn’t really know what to say.

The second poem is written by pyschoticlezbo and it’s called This is Me. This poem is about staying true to yourself and never changing your inner beauty for anyone; it’s truly a lovely little piece that is simple but effective.

Free verse is a simple poetry form that can be written without it having a rhythm or tempo, it’s a really diverse form that I recommend you to check out!
