Featured Poem: Hold on

Hold On is a wonderful poem written by Quiescent.. In this edition of Featured Poem, we take a closer look at this wonderful work.

How would you summarize Hold On?

It's about a young couple (from one point of view) who look at life fleeting by and remember the simple, easygoing nature that being a teenager brings - going out and looking at the stars on the bonnet of a car, no other worries but each other.

How did you choose the title for it?

Apart from the words being repeated throughout, I knew I wanted people to see the title as something/one sort of slipping away while the other something/one still remembers.

What inspired you to write this poem?

I knew it was something I had missed out on in my life but the idea of it still appealed to me, plus I was also thinking of my ex but we never did things like this. It was a 'what if' situation that brought on a different nostalgic feeling.

What was your favourite thing about writing Hold On?

The euphoric feeling. Feeling like I was carefree in a moment that in my otherwise full life was impossible.

When writing, do you have any rituals you follow?

Honestly, no. Extravagant lie, I sit on my bed and listen to music like all the others. I write far and few between because I don't like to force my emotions on the situation whereas I like the character to take over and tell me their stories. Hence the urgency of needing this other person to hold on.

Is there anything you would like to say to people who read your poem?

If there's ever a moment where you can let go of who you are for just one moment, take it. Life is telling you that it's OK to experience a new memory. So long as you know yourself whether it can lead to something dangerous, then don't go for it. Just don't be afraid of the memories and don't be afraid to let go because it can still be worth it.

Do you have any other poems you think people would enjoy?

Wake Up is an innocent retelling of Alice in Wonderland that any age can enjoy. The Last Lover is a cute fluff piece in a guy's point of view and realising he is deeply in love.
