Featured Poem: Screaming

Screaming is a wonderful poem written by Ariveria In this edition of Featured Poem, we take a closer look at this wonderful work.

How would you summarize Screaming?

It's about the way other people's fears and insecurities are passed on to children, who don't understand, who don't know better than to listen, and how sometimes you can't stop listening even when you're older. How all that negativity can take root.

How did you choose the title for it?

Screaming covers several emotions in this piece. It's anger, fear, depression, frustration, etc. So I think it's significant.

What inspired you to write this poem?

Frustration. I don't talk about this issue often, but what happened with my mom when I was a kid, when I didn't understand it all, is a lingering problem. A lot of my most destructive thoughts stem from that past experience, and the frustration with that has built up over the years.

What was your favorite thing about writing Screaming?

It's one of the only truly personal poems I've written, and it was kind of nice to actually express something which is usually kept quiet.

When writing, do you have any rituals you follow?

All I really do is try to find a quiet place. Talking, music, and people banging things around all make it difficult for me to stay in the right headspace.

Is there anything you would like to say to anyone who reads your poem?

All the nasty things people say when you're vulnerable can take root, but try not to let that happen. Don't start repeating any of it to yourself, don't think about it, don't let them hurt you anymore. You're better than they told you, and you don't deserve their insecurities.

Do you have any other poems you think people would enjoy?

In Amber Footprints is one that people might like. I'd definitely appreciate it if anyone took a look!
