Original Fiction of the Week: Heartfelt

Heartfelt is a wonderful original fiction written by mavis. In this edition of Original Fiction of the Week, we take a closer look at this wonderful work.

Give us a brief summary of Heartfelt.

Heartfelt is about a sixteen year old girl named Lucy who is suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy and is on the waiting list for a heart transplant. On top of all that she is also grieving the loss of her only friend.

What inspired you to write Heartfelt?

I was mainly inspired by the Finn Butler quote I used in the summary. I also went to the movies a few months ago and was served by a funny charismatic guy named Alex and that is where I got my inspiration for the character Alexander Garner.

How long have you been working on this story?

I wrote the prologue and part of the first chapter back in January. The story was published to the website on the 22nd of that month but I didn't submit any chapters until the end of July.

What is your favorite thing about writing Heartfelt?

Probably the fact that it's new to me and unlike anything I've written before. I was sticking to the same themes in a lot of my stories which made writing quite boring.

What is the most challenging thing about writing it?

The most challenging thing is definitely the research. While writing a new chapter I'm continuously googling things like cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and organ transplants to try and keep the story accurate.

Have you ever experienced writer's block with this story? If so, how did you overcome it?

Yes, after I wrote the prologue I had no idea what to write next. I just set it aside and waited for some inspiration instead of forcing it.

Do you write with an outline, or just wing it?

Not really, I just open up a new word document and see where the idea in my head goes.

Do you have any pre/post writing rituals?

I just read over it to see if there are any mistakes and also if there is anything I might want to change or add.

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

Yeah, I'd just like to say thank you. I'm so pleased with the positive feedback the story has received. I really appreciate my readers as well as those who comment, recommend and subscribe.

Special thanks to silent hearts. and elixir for editing!
