Original Fiction of the Week: Rainbow Pride

Rainbow Pride is a wonderful original fiction written by KillerPenguins that is all about coming out. In this edition of Original Fiction of the Week, we take a closer look at this amazing story.

Give us a brief summary of Rainbow Pride.

Rainbow Pride follows the story of a gay teen called Landon Barrett as he deals with the aftermath of coming out, it's kind of like a diary... you get to see how people react, certain incidents that occur, and how he deals with it all.

What inspired you to write Rainbow Pride?

My inspiration behind Rainbow Pride is personal, the story overall is based on my own coming out experience, and everything that I've had to overcome in order to get my life back on track, which is where I get my ideas from.

How long have you been working on this story?

I've wanted to write a story based on coming out for a while now, but it's only in the last few weeks that I actually decided to do it.

What is your favorite thing about writing Rainbow Pride?

My favourite thing about writing Rainbow Pride is the fact that it's based off of my life, which gives me the ability to put a lot more emotion behind the words that I type. It is also a subject that is important to me... on top of that it's something that guys, especially teens, really struggle with, and with a bit of luck I'm hoping that I can reach out to them... share my experience to help others.

What is the most challenging thing about writing it?

There's a few challenging aspects when writing a story that is personal to you, the first thing is that some of the stuff that I want to include is still quite hard for me to talk about, and that in turn makes it hard to put into words without dragging up that raw emotion. The other thing is trying to write it in a way that won't offend people, which is difficult because the topic is so controversial.

Have you ever experienced writer's block with this story? If so, how did you overcome it?

I've never experienced writers block with this story, I have however had trouble wording certain parts, so that it doesn't come across in the wrong way

Do you write with an outline, or just wing it?

Usually I do use a rough outline for my stories, but with this one I'm using the style of free writing, I'm literally typing whatever comes to my mind which I feel adds that little something extra.

Do you have any pre/post writing rituals?

Not really no, the only place I can write is my bedroom. I know it's weird, but my bedroom is my safe haven where I can let my mind free, so I guess that sitting in my room with music on is kind of like a ritual (I'm not sure if that counts).

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

To anyone who takes time to read Rainbow Nation... thank you, it means a lot to me that you would do that. If you're reading it and are struggling with the same issues feel free to inbox me to chat, I know what it's like to have to keep who you are a secret, to have to lie to the people you care about out of fear of rejection, but most of all I know what it's like having to hide who you truly are because people may not approve. On the other hand if anything you read offends you I'm sorry, but it is based on my life, and those are the experiences I've had.

Special thanks to nearly witches. and Goddess_Of_The_Muse for editing.
