Why is Self-Expression Being Laughed At?

There are many ways to express yourself. Whether it be through painting and drawing, music, dancing, sports, writing, etc.So why are these forms of self-expressions mentioned above (as well as many others) being laughed at by peers around you? Rap and Poetry....the same thing?

Seriously, the majority of the kids in my class love rap (I'm not part of the majority). But whenever they hear the word "poetry" they're all like "ewww!! poetry sucks!" I don't understand this because aren't poetry and rap basically the same thing? They're both all about rhyming.Also, they're always like "Maddie...you don't like rap? WHAT? HOW CAN IT NOT BE CONSIDERED MUSIC?" I don't find rap...
