I definitely have the same problem. I always feel like I'm using "he" or "she" too often, and then I end up using the name too often. It's definitely a challenge to find a balance but you'll get it! :)

The tense thing is another one that's a bit hard to get used to, when I wrote my first few stories I switched tenses almost every paragraph, it was terrible And the had/gotten thing comes back to tense, usually "gotten" or "got" is used in past tense and "had" is present tense. So you used it correctly in that paragraph, but because the whole paragraph was the wrong tense, you needed to switch it so it fit with the story. Does that make sense? If not, I can try to explain it better.
