The Rite of Spring was a ballet composed by Igor Stravinsky (also known for writing The Firebird) in 1913. Stravinsky himself said, "I had a fleeting vision that came to me as a complete surprise ... I saw in imagination a solemn pagan rite: sage elders, seated in a circle, watching a young girl dance herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitate the god of spring”. But when the ballet was performed, it was so heavily despised by the audience, who were more interested in traditional French ballet, that it caused a riot. Even though the crowd was in an uproar and various objects were being thrown their way, the performers continued to play on and, eventually, the audience settled down and even called for a curtain call at the conclusion of the performance. So... with that being said...
