Why thank you *puffs out chest in a proud sense*, haha. I've only just discovered him recently when I saw him on Top Gear. But I've watched a ton of his interviews, and all of QI (thanks to the powers of youtube). I actually just got his autobiography today, too. I'm so excited to start reading it!

And I love him too <3 (: I'm dying to read some of his literature next year in lit. class. It's going to be amazing :D

Your name (if refering to Stephen Fry) and profile are just full of win. Oscar Wilde is absolutely brilliant, and I love the choice of quote (:

I am glad I could be of service. although I do put my faith in Google very often. I think almost any question that can be answered by human beings at present can be answered by Google too. Which is why I sometimes end up googling ridiculous things.

It sounds like a really fun class. I've been doing European history again and again since 3rd grade and all the dates tend to mix in my tiny little brain and all that I'm left with now as I'm finishing school is a vague understanding of some of the main historical events and fleeting images from novels and stories. Though I always wished I could study history thoroughly I even thought of applying for a History degree. but as I was considering I had to take a test paper and didn't feel~ like studying and got an 8 (which is pretty bad for a straight 10s nerdish person like me). from that moment onwards history was no longer an option. XD

Dante, Boccaccio and Petrarch come to mind when I think of the Italian Renaissance. Except Dante, who -I think- you can only digest in small daily doses, it's all perfectly readable. I got a cheap edition of Boccaccio's The Decameron and kept it around reading two or three stories at random a day (but read the introduction and the first story first, my heart just melted with a new kind of sympathy for this chubby -chubby in my imagination, I have no idea if he was actually fat, the name just makes him sound as he were- Italian poet after he dedicated his book to women) and Petrarch's Il Canzoniere is really lovely in a good translation, you can read it whichever way you read any kind of poetry. With Dante, I think, you need to take a more ..multi-artistic approach, at least I did. I read this amazing translation with a lot of annotations (because a lot of mythical animals/characters, as well as people who lived during Dante's time are mentioned) and then compared each Canto with the illustrations Dali made for them. I think you should look for a good history book that pays attention to the arts/every day life not just political events if you don't know that much about what happened in Italy/Europe around that time, I have no idea how British history courses are like. We have a huge -in terms of volume of information- history course so we did it in school, I have no idea what book to recommend. There's also so much to say about Italian Renaissance in visual arts, you could borrow a few art atlases from your school library and browse through them. ohh, it's not really a major work literature-wise, but you can also read Michelangelo's sonnets. and the Renaissance humanism is reflected in Oration on the Dignity of Man by Pico della Mirandola (which is pretty short). I'd say, start with Boccaccio, read a bit about Petrarch's ideas/world-view, then pick up his sonnets (maybe read Shakespeare's at the same time, that's how we studied them in school and it was an interesting comparison) and keep Dante until this summer because it's a pretty demanding book although not impossible to get through, in between read history books, art atlases and even historical fiction novels if you like them.

No problem! Sorry I couldn't be more specific, it's hard and long winded to explain without using all the terminology, and I didn't wanna go too off-topic. If you want any more info, just drop me a line and I'll do my best to explain. :)

Oh, cool. I can imagine I'd be really rubbish at that, but it sounds interesting all the same tehe

I nearly applied to Cambridge myself. But you have to submit your application earlier than for regular unis and I was still undecided about which subject I wanted to do before the deadline. D: Plus, I'm rubbish at interviews, I wouldn't stand a chance. XD

Wow, sounds like a cool combination! I nearly took maths, but then backed out at the last minute. xD What do you do in Modern Studies?

Good luck! I wanted to apply for Lit/Lang too, but I couldn't because I couldn't take Literature to A level. Language isn't too bad, though; I replied to you on the Uni forum about the kind of things it involves. ;) I really enjoy studying it, most of the time anyway. I just hope the A level isn't made up of too much of the stuff I already know from school.

I applied to Durham for two reasons; 1) it's reputation. It really is a fantastic university and a beautiful place. and 2) because of the collegiate system. It works like Oxford and Cambridge in the fact that you belong to a house and form a little community were you eat, sleep and study etc. I applied to and got into St Chads, the smallest college and most hardest to get into (although I had no idea of this at the time) and I feel sad that theres a 99% chance I won't be going there, unless there's a freak problem with my Edinburgh application. But yeah, if you're on track to get straight As, I'd say definitely apply there. :)

Yes, I'm Sam. :D

Aw, that sucks. Me too, it's a slow and painful death. But soon it will be summer :)
What subjects do you study?

I'm really good, thanks. And yes, I did! I can't believe it, I'm so happy. But I can't believe I'm going to reject Durham uni to go to Edinburgh. tehe

Thankyou! Arms
I don't think I've ever caught your name on the boards, I'm so sorry. Facepalm I still get you confused with the user who used to be Bloodraine, that's probably why. tehe
I love your profile, too. Cheese Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite period-drama stroies, and I especially love that adaptation. I watched it the other day, as a matter of fact. In Love

How're you doing?
