I live in a dorm. It has its ups and downs, but I think it's better than commuting overall. Besides, I'm required to live on campus my first two years, especially since my university is 500 miles away from home. School is okay. I'm more ready for Spring Break than you can ever know. I'm taking Statistics, Music Theory II, Criminal Justice, Ear Training II, and Roman Tradition (plus orchestra and viola lessons).

I've been pretty good. Second semester, whoo! It feels like class has officially started again because my friends and I went out last night and didn't get to bed until 3:30 in the morning. It was awesome, but Stats this morning at 8 was horrible. How has your year been so far?

I've been super busy (which is why it took me a while to reply to this; sorry!), but other than that, it's been pretty normal. How about you? Excited for the end of the school year?

I've known three other people who committed suicide and one who attempted it, but this is the first time it has significantly impacted my life. It's hard to believe that when I go to visit family, she won't be there.

I hope you're never suicidal again. I was suicidal as well when I was much younger, but I didn't fully understand what suicide does to those left behind. I can say with some degree of certainty that no one who was at that funeral will ever commit suicide.

Thank you for the kind comment.

My parents forced my sister to take violin lessons because they were convinced it would make her smarter. I actually wanted to take violin lessons, because I wanted to be just like her. xD This was when I was five, keep in mind. I hated it for the longest time, but I enjoy it now. Pianos are definitely expensive, but most people can buy an electric keyboard for pretty cheap. Our piano was inexpensive, but it's a piece of crap. We found a broom inside it.

I know. Teenagers are always idiots on TV shows. Thankfully, my mom only watches HGTV, where there aren't very many teens. (But there are some pretty sexy carpenters.)

I'm very interested in my heritage. Oh, I definitely have a lot more. German, Irish, French... a little of everything. I'm a typical white American, a full-fledged Anglo-Saxon mutt. She doesn't think you're Chinese? That's weird. My great-grandparents on my dad's side were long gone before I was born. I barely even knew my paternal grandparents. How about you? Do you spend lots of time with your grandparents and great-grandparents?

Yeah, sometimes reality sucks. I like the waiting part of fishing. I find it very relaxing. I like meditation and getting in touch with myself. I think it's nice, especially if I'm outside. I don't like touching the slimy fish. It's so awful seeing them squirming around in pain. Bleh. I'm a vegetarian, in case you hadn't noticed.

Wow, thanks for the banner! It's really neat that you took the time to draw it yourself!

I started lessons in May. It's easy because you don't have to know pitches really, and there isn't really an issue with tone. With an instrument like the violin, you can play a note between two notes, such as a note that is too high for a C but too low for a C#. You also have to worry about the exact way you draw the bow across the strings.

I know. I'm getting sick of having to get forms and papers signed for school. I'm practically a legal adult! I can go fight in Iraq right now if I wanted! Adults don't give teens enough credit.

That's crazy. I've never seen my family tree. I don't even know my great-grandparents names on my dad's side. He doesn't know them either. Wait, no. I've seen part of a family tree for my dad's side. I was curious to know about my Cherokee ancestors because I look Native American except for my pale skin. (A lot of people think I'm Hispanic.)

The Bahamas was actually pretty bad. There are so many poor, homeless people and run-down buildings and beggars and trash on the streets. Ew. How can you stand fishing? I hate it. I usually end up just feeding ducks with sandwiches. My dad doesn't like fishing, thank God.

Piano is really fun, but maybe that's just because I'm still in the honeymoon stage of learning to play it. I think it's a pretty easy instrument to start on too. You can instinctively learn a lot of music theory, and you don't have to worry about being out of tune.

They're getting paid to do nothing. Adults really piss me off sometimes. I can say the same for every age group, but adults are very condescending.

You guys should just rent an entire plane for your family. Then again, those international planes are huge. They seat like 500 people.

It was really fun. My mom, sister, and I all want to go on another one, but my dad doesn't like them. (Although he and my mom went on one a few years ago...) It was only like four days, and we just went to the Bahamas and another little island.

Yeah, I've definitely been around music my whole life. My mom plays piano and flute, my sister plays violin and piano, and my dad plays guitar, bass, and trombone. Music is my life. Trying to give it up would be like trying to stop breathing.

No, I really am a masochist. I smother everything in habanero pepper sauce because I like the way it burns. I agree though. Over-controlling adults always feel like they're smothering me.

Whoa! That's insane! My dad is an only child and both of his parents are dead. My mom has three siblings, and I have four cousins. Aw, Ireland sounds like so much fun! Our orchestra went to New York and Boston. The trip cost was $4k. I decided I'd stay home. We were going to take a cruise, but that idea fell through. I love cruises. Have you ever been on one?

I've only been playing the viola for 7 years, but I've been playing the violin for about 13 years. (Viola is my true love, but I'll always have a special place for violin because it was my first love.) I can barely remember not being able to play an instrument, and I definitely can't remember not being able to read music. I could read music before I could read books. You should try it. Violin is a good one to start, I think. If you try to get too competitive, violin is easily one of the worst if not the worst instrument to play, but if you're just doing it for fun, it's great.

I've always felt that adults need to stop trying to control teenagers. I know they have plenty of advice and guidance, but there's a fine line between that and overpowering. We have to learn to do things ourselves. I'd rather do something the wrong way and get hurt but satisfy my curiosity. Yes, I am both an idiot and a masochist.

That is pretty sad. I live on the border between two states, so I hop over the state line all the time. How big is your family? Is it your entire extended family going? Ew, that sounds terrible. The longest flight I've been on was a little over 9 hours. That was horrible. It's so disorienting to doze off a little, wake up, and still be on a plane. Bring some meds to knock yourself out. No, I'm not kidding. I loved Switzerland and Germany. We went to small towns in the mountains in both those countries, and it was not only beautiful but peaceful.

We eat dinner together sometimes, and that's about it. Our schedules conflict so much, and we don't have that much in common. It's really hard to find something we'd all enjoy. (Especially because my dad literally cannot sit still for over an hour.) We all saw Get Smart together a few weeks ago, and everyone really enjoyed that.

Ouch! That sounds really painful! I don't know. I think playing an instrument is like being in a relationship. At first, everything is fun and happy and perfect. Then, you slowly start to realize that it's a lot of work. You get frustrated and don't want to practice and get angry when you make mistakes that you've worked on over and over. Finally, you start to enjoy it again. It still takes a lot of time and patience, but the good overrules the bad, and it becomes such a wonderful, deep experience that it's absolutely indescribable. A lot of people don't make it past the hard part, and there are still some days when I want to burn my viola and never touch music again, but I always come back to it.

Oh, screw counselors. I do not get along well with my school's counselors. We argue and get into little fights all the time. They hate me, and I hate them. I know what I'm doing and what's best for my life. They should be there to help me with my decisions, not control them!

I toured Europe a year ago with an orchestra (my family didn't come), and we've been to Canada twice (both times were just day trips). Once again, we don't really enjoy doing the same things. Most of the time if we go on vacation, we go to this ranch in Arizona, but my sister hates it there and never comes. She wants to go to a beach, but my dad hates beaches. He would rather go hiking in the mountains, but the rest of us hate that. Whoa, Vietnam? That's going to be a hell of a long flight, assuming you live in the U.S.

They're not that expensive. A metal one works better if it's high quality.

Just letting you know in case you feel like keeping your options open.
