Oh well, my interest in Indian culture grew last year when I read Bengali Nights by Mircea Eliade. It's a love novel, autobiographical-ish. It's basically the story of an European who goes to Calcutta an falls in love with a girl who just so happens to be a poet and a bit of a philosopher. It sounds a bit cliche but it had bits and pieces of Indian philosophy in it. Then later on this year, I saw a movie inspired by one of Mircea Eliade's short stories -Youth without Youth and the novel is about an old man who gets struck by lighting. He is a linguist and all his life he tried to find the origins of language and write this huge book about it. But now he grew old and realized he will never finished the book so he decides to take his own life. But, he gets struck by lighting. And then he starts to grow young. Not only that but he starts to understand things and develops an alter-ego. -It's somewhat like Phenomenon , or whatever the movie was called, only better.- So the young extremely intelligent linguist continues his studies, growing younger and younger. And then one day he meets a girl on a rainy day. She gets struck by lighting too. But she starts talking in Sanskrit and the linguist is the only who can understand it -because the action takes place in France or England, well someplace in central-western Europe- and claims to be an ancient philosopher. The linguist convinces everyone to take her back to India where she claims to have lived. When they get there and she sees the places she faints -dramatically- and then when she wakes up she can speak English again. The two fell in love. Only she starts to have night terrors, she wakes up in the middle of the night and talks in ancient languages. The linguist records everything obviously and plans to finish his book. Only the girl grows older and older. So. The linguist decides to go as far away from her as possible to save her. In the end the linguist goes back to his home town and wants to have dinner at his favorite restaurant. He meets with his friends and they all look ''normal'' as if time hadn't passed since he first left the town and got struck by lighting. No-one sees anything different in him either. They all advice him to go home because he talks nonsense. He doesn't get home, and they find him froze -it was winter- and covered in snow in the street the next day.
: )
Yeah but I want to learn Sanskrit because it's a beautiful old language. I also know a bit of Latin and I might learn Ancient Greek too. I just love languages and the Indian culture. But I felt like telling a long story.
