The narrator is talking about a situation where she's actually thinking about what the situation at hand is and the two possible ways she would think of in the future (if it ever come to that).
It hurts, the pain is too much and yet we don't let go of it. We keep staying there, doing nothing more than taking it all in and feeling the pain which we might think of as a foolish act someday (most of us do).
Don't we all believe the lies when we want to believe we are special? I'm sure we have all been there.
