PARDON ME. - Comments

  • The attitude of the first speaker is the most intriguing aspect of this poem. Is that speaker being sarcastic, or going back and forth between conciliatory grace and undignified anger? It'd be possible to write an entire essay on that question alone. The poem is short enough to make it debatable which side is right because much of the content of the poem could really be used to support either side of that argument. Perhaps it could actually be a blend of the two sides -that the first speaker is frustrated with the situation and perhaps a bigger event behind it, and doesn't know whether to react angrily or passively. It's really something that I could think about all day and never come to an exactly solid conclusion -and that's good, because some of the best poetry can be interpreted in many different ways according to the reader. I like it very much.

  • The very submissive person, yes?... nice and simple, yet very well done. I like it.
