Comfort

I look to you for comfort
For you to take away the worthlessness he left
Because I feel so lonely when the lights go down,
He so selfishly abused
And you so stubbornly defuse,
I need to feel the warmth again stuck in perpetual winter,
I swear I’m worth the risk
Give me a chance to lace my fingers with yours,
Give my a chance to show you what’s left of me,
What once was,
And how it all disappeared
Let me show you the strength of the girl that still stood when the dust settled,
Teeth gritted she took the pain
She stands before you now,
Asking you to bandage the wounds others can’t see,
But you turn her away,
Feeling worthless and unwanted she walks away holding her head high
But not for long
Her strength is running low and now with no reservoir to savor
The world will crush her with a smile
She knows her fate but keeps walking forward,
She might not make it to the finish-line
But at least she knows she tried,
She didn’t give up when rejection and disappointment flooded
She didn’t lie down at the feet of those who demanded it,
She loved
Though it was not returned,
And she will die
Leaving footprints in cement to inspire the rest.
