My Secret's Keeper

A time ago, I held a secret
that no one but I knew.
How I wanted to tell the world,
and all the angels, too!

I kept it quiet for a while
I didn't tell a soul
but secrecy soon lost its luster
and impatience took its toll.

I walked into the forest
and looked at foliage all around.
I found a little maple tree
and sat below it on the ground.

I reached into my pocket
and withdrew a little knife.
With it, I would carve
the secret in my life.

I plunged the blade into the tree
until sap began to form.
I brushed it with my finger,
so sticky, wet, and warm.

Undaunted, I continued working
the labor for me was fine.
Soon, I had carved a little heart
between your name and mine.

I told my secret to the forest
and I didn't have to shout.
It's a good thing trees can't gossip
now that my secret's out.
