That Which Lasts No Longer

I woke up with my back to his
Hesitated first with my kiss
What it was is not what it is
But I gave it anyway
My feet dangled above the floor
Every joint creaked, felt old and sore
And could not bear what once they bore
The shirt smelt of yesterday

"Maybe just for today," I thought
"The sky's blue and the floors are hot
For a day the snow will be sot"
But this I already knew:
The ground was cold against my toes
The sky hung the way it once froze
My street and mind wore heavy snows
No sweet, quivering morning dew

The pipes sang me their serenade
About the steel of which they're made
A cold montonous hum that said:
"Water is everlasting"
I looked at the unconscious man
Seeming dead as the sleeping can
Then I wished that never again
Would he wake a rested thing

I have no place where I must be
There is no place that must have me
The glass on my nightstand's empty
Water runs behind the wall
It's still early, but time is late
And no matter how long I wait
It's simpler to have loved and hate
Than to feel nothing at all.
