All That Night

All that night
did the rain fall
pitter-pattering upon the grass.
All that night
did the flowers whisper
sweet things into the trees' ears.
All that night
did the angels sing hallelujah, hallelujah
and lifted the world.
All that night
did he muse upon the petals
"why, then," he pondered,
"why must some things be so?"
"yet so they are, and so they must be."
All that night
did the cotton-fluff dandelions
sing of better things and times
waiting for a wish somewhere from Beyond.
All that night
did the leaves flutter in the wind
murmuring quiet nothings to the moon.
and so All that night
did the world breathe alive
and ask the question,
"why, why, why?"
