Red Grass

The gunshots rang out
The soliders ran about
Boom! Boom! Boom!
You weren't safe not even in a room
Slowly, slowly the grass turned red
The soliders, the soliders, they were all dead
Dead or dying I watched in disbelief
While other soliders watched in relief
Thankful that it had not been them
Thankful that instead it had been their friend
There was sorrow all around
While so many dead lay on the ground
I heard a low moan come from nearby
I wanted to do something, but all I could do was cry
Short days ago I had a life
Short days ago I had been stabbed with a knife
I laid in agony on the ground
As many others ran around
They went and left me to die
And I could do nothing not even cry
The buried me late last night
Leaving my quarters untouched along with the letter I had yet to write.
To the girl with sunshine hair and sky blue eyes
Last memory I had was her saying goodbye
The war was horrid and bad
But some liked it and were glad
My body may be broken
And my soul may have been shattered
But I'll never forget the soliders laying dead
While all around them the grass turned red
