The Struggle Inside You

Not allowing them to notice
How their fighting affects her
Does she even want them to?
Of this she can’t be sure

Everyday she hides behind
A joyful and happy mask
No one looks behind it
Their not up for the task

So no one figures out
All the times she cries
And no one looks behind
The carefully constructed lies

So whenever someone asks
What’s going on in her head
She lies about how the constant fighting
Never fails to fill her with dread

“Go,” I tell her gently
“Hide behind pretenses that aren’t true
Because in the end it all comes down
To the struggle inside you.”
