Climbing Trees

It's taken nine months to get us to where we should
We flirted out of boredom to make ourselves feel good
But now we each know where the other stands
Quite the two, we're glued in town at the hands

I wear dainty summer dresses over worn-in combat boots
All our mutual friends and enemies, they think we're really cute
But really we're just doing what makes sense,
And I suppose my affections rocket your self-confidence

We talk for hours over nothing and everything each week
And if the words dry up then we don't even have to speak
When we're together each book seems like a single page
And when we're parted it seems an eternal age

We take joy in all the silly teenage things
Like hanging out in parks and playing on the swings
And walks 'til we get lost, but you'll hold onto me
And when we're bored of walking, we just start to climb the trees

You're just so damn sensitive, and I'm a brazen slut
My paunch contrasts your scrawny frame and your bones where they jut
And you're a raving science nerd and I'm an English geek
But if the words dry up then we don't even have to speak

Who knows what the fates have got in store for us
Maybe you'll decide that it's just senseless teenage lust
But for now let's just keep it as you and me
And when we're bored of walking, we'll just start to climb the trees
