Swell

The white sand scrapes my skin as I lie here,
inanimately in this intense paradise.

The soft breeze is my only company,
and the swell is the only music that reaches my ears.

My throat is dry under this tough sun,
but my body is still unwilling to move.
My mind fights hard to register the fact that you are gone;
that you left me as soon as the daylight crossed the horizon.

I try to think of your possible reasons,
but everything that comes to my mind is the soft sound of your laughter.
Why would you leave?
Why would you walk away?

My head is a mess, and my heart is now full of scars,
but I still can't cry.
My tears can't find the way up to my eyes,
so they just wander through my veins,
burning me on the inside as I wonder...
if you'll ever come back.
