Dangerous Dependancy

You were the light in my hour of darkness
My lifeline
You kept me from sinking
You were my rock
I needed you
But now you’ve gone
You’ve gone
And the light flickers and dims
The rope starts to fray
You’ve gone
And the waves crash over my head
As I lose my grasp and my fingers slip

And while I don’t know which way is up
Can’t tell the shadow from the light
Day from night
I think of you
I know I’ve survived this once before
I tell myself I can do it again
I can
I will
I’ll teach myself to swim
To float

And when the currents drag me under
I’ll hold my breath
When I reach land
I’ll stand on the shore
I’ll stand strong
On my own two feet
That is a promise
A promise to myself
And a promise to you

And as I stand there
I’ll whisper to the wind
For all the world to hear
“Thank you.”
